‘Like a virgin: from ballet to Butoh’ was a three-part evening performed at the Societaetstheater in Dresden in September 2023. The show mixed contemporary dance, music and Butoh in different sections of the evening. The themes of the show were historical time, repetition and looping, and the repopulation of a post-apocalyptic world. Typically for this company’s work, these themes were only hinted at – sometimes more clearly than at other times. In each case, we wanted to suggest meanings that any audience member could interpret and walk away with. For video material please contact me at daniel@sloganstheater.com
Other works include “The Return of the Three Dead Wives”, a series of dance interventions based on the letters of Prince Pückler, his many girlfriends, and their imaginary, haunting revenge, which was performed in February 2024 as part of the Winter Stage Festival in Bad Muskau. SLOGANS first show, also entitled “Slogans”, was first presented in 2021 in Berlin at the former fabulous Trashera club night (RIP)! Further performances of this show took place in 2022 at ACUD and at Mahalla in Berlin, as well as twice at Cantier 123 and at the Lilli-Elbe-Strasse-Fest, both in Dresden in summer 2023. Later this show was further developed into part 1 of “Like a virgin: from ballet to Butoh”.
Important works outside the company, but aimed at our aesthetics in “Like a virgin”, were started in Berlin with the four Butoh performers, notably the performance “BananAngst”, a full-length Butoh performance performed at StudioDB in Berlin in October 2022. In this piece, as in the subsequent works in SLOGANS, improvisation was a crucial part of the process, increasing the chances of leaving the suggestive but implicit meanings of a performance open.
